"THE AVOCADO FROM THE STATE OF MEXICO “READY TO CONQUER INTERNATIONAL MARKETS”
The State of Mexico is strengthening its position as a national leader in sustainable avocado production
. With approximately 13,500 hectares under cultivation and production close to 145,000 tons, the State of Mexico ranks as the third-largest avocado-producing state in the country, behind only Michoacán and Jalisco.
This productive growth is accompanied by significant advances in plant health. The state has municipalities and agroecological areas officially recognized as free of seed-boring beetles, a key condition for accessing national and international markets with high quality standards.
Among the municipalities recognized for this status are Temascaltepec, Donato Guerra, Villa de Allende and Juchitepec. Additionally, there are agroecological areas free of this pest in Coatepec Harinas, San Simón de Guerrero, Ixtapan del Oro and Tejupilco.
Certified quality opens the door to new markets.

Thanks to its phytosanitary conditions and compliance with strict food safety standards, avocados produced in the State of Mexico can be marketed in various international markets. Canada and Japan currently stand out as key export destinations.
APEAMEX-affiliated producers comply with the requirements established under NOM-066-FITO-1995 and hold certifications under Food Safety Risk Reduction Systems. They also have organic certifications such as LPO, NOP, and COR, as well as commercial certifications and recognitions including GLOBALG.A.P., GRASP, and Rainforest Alliance.
These achievements reflect the commitment of avocado producers from the State of Mexico to remaining at the forefront of plant health, food safety, sustainability, and quality.
The sector’s infrastructure has also made significant progress. Currently, the State of Mexico has two packing facilities certified by the National Service for Agro-Alimentary Public Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA), enabling them to prepare avocados for export to various international destinations.
For APEAMEX, it is a source of pride that the two packing facilities in the State of Mexico holding this certification are part of our association.
A commitment that also protects the environment.

The commitment of the avocado sector in the State of Mexico goes beyond phytosanitary compliance. The State of Mexico has also taken a leading role in environmental protection.
Since 2024, a procedure has been in place to verify that orchards do not exceed the agricultural boundary or become established within Protected Natural Areas. These efforts are complemented by practices focused on soil conservation, responsible water use, forest protection, and biodiversity preservation.
In this way, sustainable agriculture has become an essential component of the sector’s development. Producing responsibly, without compromising our natural heritage, is a non-negotiable principle for our affiliated producers.
Temascaltepec, ready to export to the United States
participating orchards in Temascaltepec have already complied with the requirements established in the Binational Operational Work Plan for the Export of Avocados to the United States.

The start of exports is subject to the corresponding notification and authorization by U.S. authorities. Once this process is completed, a new commercial opportunity will open for producers from the State of Mexico, strengthening the presence of avocados from the State of Mexico in one of the world’s most important markets.
With production, certifications, infrastructure, and environmental responsibility, the avocado sector in the State of Mexico continues moving toward a more competitive and sustainable future.
APEAMEX is the gateway to avocados from the State of Mexico, the third-largest avocado-producing state in the country. We bring together thousands of producers and leading packing facilities, prepared to meet the demands of national and international markets.
